Holly Adams on Clowning as Service, Voice Acting Craft, and Creating The Mysterious Chirp Host Noah Chrysler welcomes performer and voice actor Holly Adams to Good News York to discuss commedia dell’arte archetypes, clowning, voiceover work, and her sci‑fi mystery podcast. Holly shares how humor helped her through high school, leading to training in commedia and clowning, and describes hospital/war-zone clowning as service, including work with the real Patch Adams via the Gesundheit Institute and a project trip after 9/11 that brought clowns to Afghanistan to support civilians and hospitals. She explains that this work isn’t always comedy and recounts singing to help a catatonic dementia patient reconnect with her daughter shortly before dying. Holly offers foundational principles for clowning (don’t punch down; serve the community) and voice acting (training, listening to top work, proper equipment, professionalism, fair rates), notes winning a One Voice Award for Miss Mary in GraphicAudio’s The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, and gives narration tips like varying tone and intimacy. She also hosts Syracuse Orchestra kids’ concerts as an “engagerator.” Holly outlines creating The Mysterious Chirp, a SAG-AFTRA, award-winning, inclusive sci‑fi mystery audio drama with student sound-design teams earning IMDb credit, seasonal arcs plus interviews, and teases a running gag using Noah’s name. 00:00 Welcome and Introductions 00:31 Commedia Archetypes Explained 02:25 Discovering Clowning 04:41 Training and Dell’Arte Path 05:04 Patch Adams and Whole Care 06:27 War Zone Hospital Clowning 12:12 Dementia Ward Breakthrough 15:08 Hospital Clowning Training 17:33 Clowning as Service 20:05 Getting Into Voice Acting 22:22 Award Winning Audio Drama 23:20 Voice Tips for Narration 27:57 No Character Voices Today 28:37 Mysterious Chair and Orchestra 29:10 Kids Concert Hosting 30:50 Instrument Detective Games 31:49 Teaching Artist Skills 32:31 Origin of The Chirp 35:26 Casting and Easter Eggs 37:26 Student Sound Lab 39:56 Release Schedule Format 41:02 Between Seasons Interviews 42:38 Fan Reactions and Audio Worlds 44:57 Improv and The Pub 46:29 Where to Find Holly 48:22 Running Gag Tease 50:53 Local Guest Suggestions 54:00 Outro and Sponsor Thanks
