Jeff the Magic Man! | GNY EP.206

GNY Ep.206 | feat. Jeff the Magic Man

In Episode 206 of Good News York, host Noah Chrysler welcomes Jeff D’Ambrosio — better known as Jeff the Magic Man, a Syracuse-based children’s entertainer, balloon artist, magician, stilt walker, and puppeteer who has been honing his craft since middle school. What starts as a casual interview quickly turns into a dazzling live performance, as Jeff treats the studio to some of the fastest and most intricate balloon art, you’ll ever see.

The episode opens with Jeff making a classic balloon dog in record-breaking time, then pulling out a more elaborate balloon person he calls "Bob" to demonstrate the range of his artistry. From there, Jeff shares the origin story of his career: seeing the Twin Magicians perform at a local event as a kid, being captivated not by the tricks themselves but by the smiles on everyone’s faces, and realizing that the power to create a moment of pure joy was something special. He took lessons from one of those magicians, volunteered at church carnivals, and has been building his craft ever since.

Jeff talks about competing at **Twist and Shout**, the international balloon art conference in Las Vegas, where he spent 36 straight hours building three award-winning sculptures — including ants on a log inspired by a real bug he followed at Green Lakes, a 1960s Americana scene with a working Bluetooth speaker inside a balloon radio, and a life-sized lady in a bathtub inflated with a leaf blower. All three pieces placed in the competition, earning him recognition among his international peers.

The conversation also covers Jeff’s passion for sustainability in balloon art. He lectures at conferences on finding creative second lives for uninflated and popped balloons — from turning them into roses for a friend’s wedding boutonnière to composting natural latex. He breaks down balloon sizes (160s, 260s, all the way up to 660s), his creative process, and the perfectionist mindset that drives him: always seeing the one point that could have been better but learning not to let it get him down.

Jeff also shares his ambitious goal of completely reinventing the balloon line experience at events. Instead of the traditional wait-in-line model, he’s developing a performance-style approach — gathering crowds in an orchestra arc, entertaining them while he works, and implementing a deli-style ticket system for large festivals. He sees it as a way to make the experience better for everyone, turning balloon art from a transaction into a show.

The episode wraps with Jeff making a series of live balloon creations on camera — including a flower and an "oddity" from his current creative theme — followed by info on where to find him online and his upcoming appearances at Destiny USA’s Halloween event and Enchanted Beaver Lake’s fall festival.

Whether you’re a fan of magic, balloon art, or just great stories from passionate local creators, this episode is a joyful ride from start to finish.
